McGRAW-HILL BRINGS A CLASSIC WORK ON THE REVOLUTION
THAT CREATED THE PERSONAL COMPUTER BACK INTO PRINT

FIRE IN THE VALLEY:
The Making of The Personal Computer

McGraw-Hill has published an updated and revised edition of the classic book on the making of the personal computer, FIRE IN THE VALLEY: The Making of the Personal Computer, Updated Edition, by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine (January 2000; $16.95 trade paperback). McGraw-Hill has also released a special collector's edition ($34.95, cloth) that includes a CD-ROM containing digital files of all the photos, sound bites from the original interviews by the authors, and even more fully expanded information. Both books' release in January coincide with the 25th anniversary of the PC. FIRE IN THE VALLEY was first published by Osborne/ McGraw-Hill in 1984 and has been out of print since 1992. It remains today the only book to chronicle--while it was happening--the birth of the personal computer from an insider perspective.

FIRE IN THE VALLEY, Updated Edition, tells the colorful and sometimes hilarious stories of the personal computer pioneers. Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, Steve Wozniak, Ed Roberts, Ted Nelson are all there and more. The book captures the medley of influences of the times--the wild risk-taking, the 60s consciousness, rebellion against bureaucracy, the kitchen-table engineering--that were essential to the making of the personal computer.

Freiberger and Swaine explore these topics with the insights from today's vantage point. They put the events that shaped two short decades into an historical context. They explain the technological advances that made the PC possible and reveal how software came to play a more

central and profitable role. They explore the politics of inventors and innovation and show how the race to create the PC lit a fire of excitement in Silicon Valley--a fire that ultimately changed our society forever.
